Participation of children under 13 years

Sep 09 2019

The AWF has introduced a minimum age of 13 years to compete in AWF-sanctioned events. The AWF Board of Directors has approved a transitional period for the application of this regulation in response to requests from State Members who have already received entries from children for events that are scheduled to be held in 2019.

The participation of children born in 2007 or later is permitted in AWF-sanctioned events held before 31 December 2019, provided that their parent/guardian signs a waiver and release form. Please find attached a form that you can edit to add the name of particular events.

From 1 January 2020, no child under the age of 13 years, calculated by their year of birth, is permitted to compete in an AWF-sanctioned weightlifting competition. Children U13 can still be members of Weightlifting Clubs, State Associations and the AWF. State Members and Clubs are encouraged to continue to engage young children in age-appropriate activities using modified equipment, i.e. lightweight technique bars and technique discs, to provide a foundation for their future entry into competitive weightlifting.
